Blooming Meadow

The original sketch for the Blooming Meadow pattern is a color test in a sketchbook I submitted for the Sketchbook Project. The project had a devastating setback last year: When they moved the sketchbook library, a truck caught fire, and a large part of the collection burned. I don’t know if mine made it, but luckily I have photos of the sketches.

Usually, the sketching process is easy, and when ideas pop up, the first draft can be quickly drawn on any piece of paper (even on a corner of a napkin, whatever there is to use). When I was starting the sketchbook for the Sketchbook Project, I had a bit of a fear of blank paper. To find the creative flow, I started by testing some colors.

Pattern elements and repetition sketch

I drew the color test as shapes of different flowers and plants. When the sketchbook continued its journey toward the USA, I continued to create a pattern by first turning the shapes into vector graphic elements. Then I made a first repetition test with black and white before I added colors.

With mock-up photos it is possible to test the scale of the design and see how the pattern would look on a ready product.

The scale of a vector graphic design can easily be adjusted according to the use of the pattern. Don’t hesitate to ask me if you like the pattern and want to know how it would work with your products!
